standard 4.0 scale

Weights add up to 80%, so this is your grade on the work graded so far. The other 20% is not in it yet — the final grade calculator shows what you need on it.

Show the math
  • Homework 95% × 20% = 19.0
  • Quizzes 88% × 20% = 17.6
  • Midterm exam 82% × 25% = 20.5
  • Project 90% × 15% = 13.5
  • Grade 70.6 ÷ 80% = 88.3%

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade with weighted categories?

Multiply each category’s score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. Homework 95% at 20%, quizzes 88% at 20%, a midterm 82% at 25% and a project 90% at 15% give 70.6 ÷ 80 = 88.25%.

How do I calculate my grade from points?

Add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible. 314 points out of 400 is 314 ÷ 400 = 78.5%.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

That usually means part of the class is not graded yet, often the final exam. Dividing by the weights you have entered gives your grade on the work so far, which is what most online gradebooks show.

What letter grade is 88%?

On plus/minus bands 88% is a B+ (87–89). On ten-point bands it is a B (80–89).

Weighted categories

Most syllabuses split a grade into categories — homework, quizzes, exams — each worth a share of the total. Your grade is each category’s average multiplied by its weight, added up. If the weights you have so far do not reach 100%, divide by what they do add up to.

The example above: 95 × 0.20 + 88 × 0.20 + 82 × 0.25 + 90 × 0.15 = 19.0 + 17.6 + 20.5 + 13.5 = 70.6 points out of a possible 80, so the current grade is 70.6 ÷ 0.80 = 88.25%, a B+.

Total points

Some classes simply add up every point: your grade is points earned divided by points possible. Switch to “Total points” and enter each assignment, or each category’s totals from your gradebook.

Copy the weights from the syllabus

The weights are the one thing a gradebook screenshot often hides. They are almost always in the syllabus under “grading” or “assessment”.

Drop the lowest?

If your teacher drops the lowest quiz, leave it out of the quiz average before you enter it.

What this calculator assumes
  • Weights are taken as percentages of the course grade. If they do not total 100%, the result is your grade on the work entered.
  • Letter grades use the plus/minus bands from The Princeton Review’s table, or ten-point bands if you choose them. Your syllabus overrides both.
  • Nothing is rounded before the letter is assigned; many teachers round up from .5.
