How GPA is calculated
Every letter grade has a grade-point value. Multiply it by the class’s credit hours to get grade points, add the grade points for all your classes, and divide by your total credit hours.
GPA = total grade points ÷ total credit hours
Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class give 12 + 12 = 24 grade points over 7 credits, so the GPA is 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.Step-by-step guide.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Turn each letter grade into grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0), multiply by the class’s credit hours, add everything up, and divide by the total credit hours. The calculator above does it and shows each step.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA scores every class out of 4.0. Weighted GPA adds points for harder classes — commonly 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB — so it can go above 4.0.
Is a 3.7 GPA an A or a B?
A 3.7 is an A− on the standard 4.0 scale.

Which grade scale should I pick?
The one on your transcript or in your school’s catalog. Most US schools use the standard scale (A− = 3.7); some give an A+ 4.3, use thirds (A− = 3.67), or have no plus and minus.
