Is a 3.0 GPA good?

3.0= B

On the standard 4.0 scale

A 3.0 GPA is a straight B average on the 4.0 scale β€” a full point above a C (2.0) and a full point below straight As. It meets any requirement set at 3.0 or below.

(4.0 + 2.0) Γ· 2 = 3.0

  • A 3.0 = a B average
  • An A and a C in equal-credit classes also average 3.0
  • A B is 84–86% on common plus/minus bands, not 75%
  • 3.0 is 75% of the 4.0 maximum β€” which is not the same as a 75% grade
  • From 2.8 over 60 credits, 30 credits at 3.4 reach 3.0

Is a 3.0 GPA a 75%?

No. 3.0 is three quarters of the 4.0 maximum, but GPA is not a percentage. A 3.0 is a B, and a B is usually 80–89% (84–86% on plus/minus bands).

Weighted or unweighted?

A 3.0 unweighted is a B average in every class. A 3.0 weighted includes bonus points, so the unweighted figure behind it is lower.

Raising a 3.0

From a 3.0 over 60 credits, 30 credits at 3.6 reach a 3.2, and 30 credits at 4.0 reach a 3.33. The raise GPA calculator works out your own numbers.

Minimums

Where a program publishes a minimum GPA, 3.0 is a common figure, but it is not universal. Read the requirement for the program you want.
